A few days ago in Stavanger, Norway, Reed Projects Gallery opened the latest solo exhibition of Nina Ghafari entitled “Nothing Exists Alone”.
Nina is a young Norwegian born Iranian visual artist, based in Stavanger Norway. Her art practice and productions transcend genres and have previously included curation, music production, fashion, visual art, club productions and performance-based work.
Her work is a raw and often painful testament to her unfiltered exploration of memory and self through text and image.
Formally, comparisons with the likes of Basquiat, street art’s Bäst, Karel Appel’s CoBrA group and the stylings of Art Povera’s assemblages may give us a basic idea of what the works look like, but all fall criminally short of conveying the raw power of art produced against the current backdrop of a crumbling 21st century Capitalism. Contemporary Art’s sterile and vapid embracement of commerce and style in a hegemonic culture of white cubes, art fairs and Bienalle’s is being rightly challenged by a new breed of artist whose work demands to be seen, whether on the streets, or in the recent explosion of small independent galleries and project spaces dedicated to providing a platform for this generations voices.
